Alpinia (Caerulea Red Back, Zerumbet Variegated, Henyri & Nutans)
Alpinia plants are lush gingers. Their tall stems show off striking and distinct leaves in an array of shades. They are a great choice for screening in shady areas, as they form an upright, dense clump at the base of the plant. Alpinia's, like every other plant we sell, are cultivated right here at our Nursery.
Light requirement: Shade/ Part shade or indirect light
Water requirement: Moderate. Water regularly during dry periods.
Watering frequency: Water frequently to establish plant, then it only requires minimal drinks.
Soil: Well-draining, fertilised soil.
Skill level: Suits Moderate Green thumb. Prune stems to ground level when leaves look tatty and old, which will promote new growth.
Growth rate: Moderate to fast growth.
Suitable for container gardens: Gingers will quickly grow out of their pots!

‘Cearulea Red Back or Atherton Ginger, from whence it came’ Mature Height: 1.5-2m Leaf colour: Glossy green on top, and maroon/red underside with gold tones. Size of leaf: A long, oblong shape with point, grows up to 40cm long and 10cm wide. Produced in even ranks of pairs, symmetrical. Flower Colour: Creamy/white Flower Shape: An abundance of small flowers produced from one stem. Flowers appear to be one petal opening from the bottom with a pinkish lip, shell-like. Deep blue berries appear after flowering. |
