Palm tree- Foxtail
(Wodyetia bifurcata) This neat, self-cleaning palm has a a grey trunk with compact feathery fluffy fronds (hence the name foxtail). It is native to North QLD's Cape York and suited to that tropical/ subtropical climate. Fast growth rate and is drought & frost tolerant once established. Fun fact: bifurcata is Latin for “twice divided,” in reference to the shape of both the fruit and the fish-tailed leaflets.
Mature Height : 10-15m
Mature Width: 30cm trunk
Light requirement: Full sun or part shade.
Water requirement: Minimal, thrives in drought.
Watering frequency: Occasional. Applying a layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant will help retain soil moisture.
Soil: Well-draining, fertilised soil. Will tolerate most soil types including sandy soil.
Skill level: Suits Beginner Green thumb, low-maintenance plant.
Growth rate: Slow to Moderate to fast growth/ species dependent.
Suitable for container gardens: Choose a pot at least twice the size of plant. Water regularly if you are growing them in pots as it will dry out quickly and the stress will make them more prone to disease.
