This upright shrubby, flowering succulent is native to Africa and is super low-maintenance. It bounces back quickly after a good prune and is easily propagated- making it a firm favourite for sustainable gardening. Portulacaria's growth habit makes it an awesome option for growing in a hanging basket with it's long trailing stems. Portulacaria afra - This succulent is referred to as 'Elephant bush', because it’s a favorite food of elephants. Due to its resemblance to jade plants (Crassula ovata), elephant bush is also called a dwarf jade plant, however Portulacaria 'afra' and jade plants aren’t related to each other. Portulacaria 'afra' has small, oval, fleshy leaves and reddish woody stems. The leaves are edible, compared to Crassula 'ovata which are midly toxic.
