Palm tree- Red neck palm
(Dypsis leptocheilos) Sometimes called Teddy Bear palm due to the softness of the trunk, which is wine-coloured and as it matures produces striking rings. This elegant palm does not develop additional trunks making this a good choice for a feature tree as it won't take over like some other palms. Moderate growth rate and is cold-hardy. The leaves are very long and offer shelter for under-story plants.
Light requirement: Full sun or part shade.
Water requirement: Minimal, thrives in drought once established.
Watering frequency: Occasional. Applying a layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant will help retain soil moisture.
Soil: Well-draining, fertilised soil. Will tolerate most soil types including sandy soil.
Skill level: Suits Beginner Green thumb, low-maintenance plant.
Growth rate: Slow to Moderate to fast growth/ species dependent.
Suitable for container gardens: Choose a pot at least twice the size of plant. Water regularly if you are growing them in pots as it will dry out quickly and the stress will make them more prone to disease.
