Sansevieria (Mother In Law's Tongue or Snake Plant)

 

Check out this Sansevieria, commonly known as Mother in Law's tongue. A hardy and easy-growing plant, cultivated at Lomalagi. This striking feature plant is perfect for adding a touch of interest to any garden landscape. If kept indoors, Sansevieria is an air-purifying plant that will add some fresh vibes to your space! 

Light requirement: Shade, or part shade, but prefers bright indirect light. Avoid harsh full sun. 
Water requirement: Minimal

Watering frequency: Allow soil to dry before watering. Beware of over watering if kept indoors as it will cause root rot. Water once every two weeks.
Soil: Prefers well-draining, dry soil.
Skill level: Suits Beginner Green thumb, low-maintenance plant.
Growth rate: Slow growing

Suitable for container gardens: Yes, this is an architectural feature plant perfect for pots.

Leaf Colour: Large, elongated, sword-shaped dark green leaves, with mottled/ stripy white, and yellow on the outside leaf edges. Leaves are somewhat fleshy and have pointed tips.

Size of leaf: Dense,upright, stiff spears that can grow up to 1m


Mature Height: 30cm-1m (depending on environment and growth conditions)
Mature Width: Can spread rapidly if planted in the garden, so by mindful as it can easily take over! This plant quickly grows a network of creeping underground stems (i.e. rhizomes) that send up shoots, which is why it is considered an environmental weed in QLD, NSW & NT. We suggest to keep this as a potted plant!

 

Flower Colour: White. cream coloured

Flower Shape: Flowers are produced on a long spike of 1m, which is covered in dozens of buds. Flowers resemble small lillies.
Flower Fragrance: Yes, strong fragrance
Flower Season: Infrequently, very rare to flower. When the Sansevieria is constantly stressed and root-bound, that's when the flowers start to bloom.
